About Alan

Alan Barnett worked as Electronic Design and Production Coordinator for Oxford University Press, ESL Division, where he took the division from the drawing board to fully-integrated digital production while also contributing as a staff designer. He then moved on to work as Technical Specialist in Digital Design and Production for Courier Corporation, a major book printer. Alan is the author of Right from the Start: The Guide to Preparing Digital Files for Print Production. Alan possesses a rare combination of abilities both as a highly talented designer and an experienced production professional.

Alan has been invited to be a guest lecturer in typography at School of Visual Arts in New York City and in graphic design business at Westfield State University in Westfield, MA.

In 2006, Alan's photography hobby morphed into professional work as he gained the skills to offer photography to his clients instead of hiring outside talent. Whether in the studio or on location, Alan specializes in corporate and nonprofit events, personal and business portraiture, and documenting community life for clients including NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Citymeals-on-Wheels, and Central Synagogue. Alan derives the greatest satisfaction from incorporating his photos into his design projects. See Alan's photography portfolio at alanbarnettphoto.com.

Testimonials

Alan Barnett is 5-star all the way when it comes to interior design. I had the pleasure of hiring and working with Alan recently for my nonfiction business book. The project was more complex than I realized, but Alan rafted through the whitewater magnificently, coming in on time and on budget. He also contributed some creative ideas that were a nice addition to the book. He's a pro, and you won't do better! I'm looking forward to working with Alan again.

Alan has been a pleasure and a great value to work with. As a first time publisher I didn't know what I didn't know. However I wanted a very professional design and cover. Alan not only delivered exactly that, exceeding my expectations, but has been as committed to excellence in this process as I could have hoped for. On top of that, his design sense is very good and the creative expression he has delivered is top notch. In my day job I am the CEO of a digital design agency and so I not only have high standards but well developed creative muscles. Seen through the light of my professional experience, I can only say Alan is as good as you could hope for and worth every penny he asks.

Alan rescued my book's cover design. He immediately grasped the tone sought to be conveyed, creating a clean, crisp appealing design that perfectly fit the themes of my book. His execution and knowledge of the publishing requirements were perfect. Highly skilled and dependable.

It was a pleasure working with Alan and benefiting from his experience, flexibility, competence and expertise. An earlier reviewer called him a "design god." He did a wonderful interior design job for our project, and when there were issues, he was forthright and direct in identifying them and suggesting solutions. He was patient and responsive as well as creative and adaptable. I highly recommend him for new as well as experienced authors.

— Jessica Wolf

Alan did a fantastic job and was a dream to work with. I highly recommend him to everyone. He is highly dependable... if he says he'll do it, he does it faster than you expected, better than you had expected, more professionally than you imagined possible. If anyone has a question about hiring him, drop me a line, and I will sing more praises. As an aside, I've been a writer in another field for a long time, and have struggled to find a level of professionalism in self publishing. Alan was the answer to that.
